Some are, depending on the services they offer. In California, a license is required for jobs over $1,000 or permit-required work. For those, we connect you with licensed pros.

Pricing and Payment

Pricing depends on job type and complexity. After submitting a request you’ll receive an instant estimate or quotes from available handypeople to compare and choose.

We aim for transparent pricing. If scope changes during the visit, your handyman will communicate any adjustments before continuing—no surprise charges.

No hidden fees. Upkeep charges a small platform fee (up to 8%), which is included in the quote. You always see the full price before booking.

Pay securely in Upkeep with a credit or debit card. Funds are held until the job is complete and you’re satisfied.

California Handyman Laws & Regulations

There’s no specific “handyman license.” Unlicensed handypeople may perform jobs under $1,000 (labor + materials) if no building permit is required and they don’t hire helpers.

Minor projects under the $1,000 limit such as patching drywall, painting, furniture assembly, faucet repair, shelving, gutter cleaning, and TV mounting—so long as no permit is required and no assistants are used.

Yes. As of Jan 1, 2025 (AB 2622), the limit is $1,000 (labor + materials). It’s illegal to split a job to avoid the limit.

Upkeep specializes in small projects under $1,000. If your project is larger or needs a permit, we’re happy to refer you to licensed contractors.

Yes. Our onboarding covers the $1,000 exemption rules and restrictions on permit-required work and advertising.

A handyman handles smaller jobs under $1,000 and typically works solo. Licensed contractors (Class B or trade-specific Class C) can perform higher-value/complex work, handle permits, and employ workers.

No. Work requiring permits or structural changes (e.g., framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing) must be done by licensed contractors—regardless of price.

Yes. We follow CSLB regulations, including the AB 2622 exemption increase, and ensure listings comply with licensing laws. (This section is informational only and not legal advice.)
